It’s the crema on the espresso!

A heavy, strong and beautiful tamping station that works perfectly with my Profitec portafilters. The portafilter handle rests in the slot at the side and the portafilter rests evenly on the rubber “O” ring on the top. The stable platform supports a balanced and level portafilter, meaning I can obtain a perfectly level tamp with double spout, single spout and bottomless portafilters. My espresso extracts more evenly now – gone are the days of one shot glass filling up before the other. This unit is the simplest, sturdiest design I’ve seen, made entirely from polished aluminium with a second rubber “O” ring on the bottom to stop it marking any surface you place it on and the ring keeps it in place. An classic example of quality German engineering. In summarising, a very high quality product and beautiful piece of craftsmanship that helps in obtaining an even puck density. Using rubber gaskets on the top and bottom, the portafilter and counter top are protected from scratches.

I think there is a couple of design flaws with the ECM Tamping Station. The top rubber gasket sits on the inside corner which doesn't make contact with the portafilter in any way. I was expecting it to have some purpose in life. The image on the website indicates the upper rubber gasket is a tad lower on the inside which looks like it would protect the portaflter a bit more. (Not on the tamping station I have though). Also the 73mm hole in the middle is a tad too large where on a few occaisions my portafilter has managed to get stuck during a tamp. I can get around the "getting stuck" problem by making sure the portafliter is perfectly centred before tamping. (Note that I have all original ECM portaflters). Saying all this, the Tamping Station does provide a perfectly level portafilter for tamping and will sit there quite nicely without having to hang onto it. It also looks the part next to the ECM machine.

This portable tamping station is made with solid polished aluminium that will give you decades of balanced tamping with your 58mm Portafilter. It has a rubber ring gasket on the bottom and top to prevent slipping.In comparison to using your kitchen bench for the tamp, the ECM station wont scratch your portafilter, as it has a deep inner frame that just fits.
